Initial Steps
The position-closing operations probably had this error "Close operation failed. Operation timed out. Manually close your position" which indicates a connection loss between your computer and the brokerage servers. This error can occur when closing a position manually or automatically using a NinjaScript, ATM Strategy or any 3rd party add-on.
Here's what to do when you encounter this error:
- First, contact your account provider's emergency trade desk to ensure that the open position is successfully closed, especially if this is a live account. For NinjaTrader accounts, the emergency trade desk can be reached at orders@ninjatrader.com. For other brokers, evaluation, or prop firm accounts, contact your account provider directly.;
- To help prevent this from reoccurring, restart your computer and modem, and restart the NinjaTrader Desktop app daily to refresh all open connections.
- Review the connection troubleshooting steps to prevent future connection losses.
Troubleshooting Steps for Connection Losses
- Restart NinjaTrader, your PC, and your modem/router.
- Install all available updates for your PC.
- Create new connections which can resolve issues such as a connection stuck in a "Connecting" status.
- Clear your DNS from the Command Prompt window.
- Disable your VPN service if applicable.
Additional information regarding connection issues:
- Internet Connection: Use a hardwired internet connection, as wireless and satellite connections can drop packets or have poor latency. If a low latency connection is not available, a VPS can be a good alternative.
- Connection on Startup: Set your connection to connect on start-up so your workspace only needs to load once.
- Resource Usage: Reduce the number of applications running on your system.
- Windows Search Indexing: Exclude NinjaTrader folders from indexing.
- Check the Log Tab: The Log tab in the Control Center provides a real-time display of application and trading events which can be helpful in troubleshooting.
- ISP Issues: Problems with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can cause disconnections.
- Broker Issues: Problems with the broker can also cause disconnections.
- Network Instability: Network instability between the NinjaTrader Desktop app and the broker's servers can cause connection loss errors.
- Mobile hotspots and public Wi-Fi networks may not be reliable enough for trading applications.
- Firewall, antivirus, or backup software can interfere with the connection to brokerage servers.
- Replikanto Log: Replikanto logs broker disconnections in NinjaTrader.
Important Considerations
- Order Management: If using Replikanto, it is important to note that Replikanto does not control the connection between NinjaTrader and the broker. It also uses the NinjaTrader flattening method to try to close the positions, if it does not work on NinjaTrader it will not work in Replikanto when using the Flatten All method as it uses the NinjaTrader to flatten the account.
- NinjaTrader Performance: NinjaTrader's performance is not affected by internet download speed, but connection losses may be more noticeable.
By following these steps, you can address the "Close operation failed" error and minimize the risk of it occurring again.
