"Current price is outside the price limits" error

This article explains why orders get rejected with the error "current price is outside the price limits" and how to fix it. This error, also called "order price outside bands" or "order rejection," occurs when exchanges enforce price bands around the current market price.

Understanding the error

Exchanges set acceptable price ranges (called price bands or order bands) above and below the current market price. Orders outside these ranges are automatically rejected. This protects markets from erroneous orders far from fair value.

Common causes and solutions

Order price too far from market price

Your order is outside the exchange's acceptable range. This often happens when:

• Market conditions are volatile and price bands have tightened
• You're placing orders based on stale price data
• Limit orders are set too aggressively

Solution: Check the current market price and submit your order closer to it. Refresh your quotes before placing orders during fast-moving markets.

Missing or misplaced decimal point

A common mistake is entering 415025 instead of 4150.25. This puts your order thousands of points away from the market.

Solution: Double-check decimal placement before submitting. For futures, verify the contract's tick size and decimal requirements.

Wrong ATM Strategy parameter type

Using "Price" when "Currency" is intended sends orders to the wrong price level:

• Stop Loss set to Price = 20 submits order at $20
• Stop Loss set to Currency = 20 submits order $20 away from entry

Solution: Verify your ATM Strategy uses the correct parameter type for each component.

Stop order on wrong side of market

Buy stops must be above current price; sell stops must be below current price. Placing stops on the wrong side triggers rejection.

This can happen when:

• Markets move quickly while you're placing/modifying orders
• Stops are placed within a few ticks of the current price

Solution: Give stops more distance from current price in volatile conditions, or use market orders for entries.

Replikanto hedge feature with negative ratio

When using Replikanto's hedge feature with Follower Ratio = -1, leader orders near the bid/ask can copy to followers on the wrong side of the market. Since Replikanto 1.7.0.0, copied exit stops, and changes to them, that would land on the wrong side of the follower's market are adjusted to the follower's bid/ask automatically; entry stop orders are not adjusted and can still be rejected, so the solutions below still apply to entries.

Solution:

• Use market orders to open positions when hedging
• Set profit targets (TP) and stop losses (SL) further from entry price
• Use the ATM Copy feature for hedging setups
• Allow extra distance during high volatility
