This article explains how to handle the situation when position-closing operations fail due to connection loss between your computer and brokerage servers, and how to prevent it from happening again.
Immediate Actions Required
The position-closing operations probably encountered this error:
Close operation failed. Operation timed out. Manually close your position
This usually indicates a connection loss between your computer and the brokerage servers. It can also happen when a market order that is still in flight keeps NinjaTrader's Flatten from closing the position (see "When Replikanto asks NinjaTrader to flatten" below). This error can occur when closing a position manually or automatically using a NinjaScript, ATM Strategy, or any third-party add-on.
When you encounter this error, take these steps immediately:
-
Contact your account provider's emergency trade desk to ensure that the open position is successfully closed. This is especially critical if this is a live account.
- For NinjaTrader accounts, contact the emergency trade desk at orders@ninjatrader.com
- For other brokers, evaluation accounts, or prop firm accounts, contact your account provider directly
- Restart your computer and modem, then restart the NinjaTrader Desktop app to refresh all open connections
- Follow the troubleshooting steps below to prevent future connection losses
Verify the Position Was Closed
After contacting the trade desk, confirm that the position has been successfully closed:
- Check your account balance in NinjaTrader to verify the position no longer appears
- Review your trade execution history to confirm the close order was processed
- If using Replikanto, verify that the local position state reflects the closure
- Contact the trade desk again if you cannot confirm the position was closed
Prevent Future Connection Issues
To minimize the risk of connection losses during critical trading operations:
- Restart NinjaTrader, your PC, and your modem/router daily to refresh all connections
- Install all available updates for your PC to ensure stability
- Use a hardwired internet connection instead of wireless or satellite, which can drop packets or have poor latency
- Consider a VPS if a low-latency connection is not available in your area
- Set your connection to connect on startup so your workspace only needs to load once
- Reduce the number of applications running on your system to free up resources
- Exclude NinjaTrader folders from Windows Search Indexing to reduce system overhead
Troubleshooting Connection Problems
If you experience persistent connection issues, work through these troubleshooting steps:
Basic Connection Checks
- Restart NinjaTrader, your PC, and your modem/router
- Create new connections in NinjaTrader to resolve issues such as a connection stuck in "Connecting" status
- Clear your DNS cache from the Command Prompt window
- Disable your VPN service if applicable
- Check the Log tab in the Control Center for real-time application and trading events
Network and Environment Issues
Several environmental factors can cause connection losses:
- Internet Connection: Wireless and satellite connections can drop packets or have poor latency. Use hardwired connections when possible.
- Mobile hotspots and public Wi-Fi networks: These may not be reliable enough for trading applications.
- ISP Issues: Problems with your Internet Service Provider can cause disconnections.
- Network Instability: Instability between the NinjaTrader Desktop app and the broker's servers can cause connection loss errors.
- Firewall, antivirus, or backup software: These can interfere with the connection to brokerage servers.
Broker-Related Issues
- Broker Problems: Issues at the brokerage can also cause disconnections.
- Replikanto Log: Replikanto logs broker disconnections in NinjaTrader for troubleshooting.
When Replikanto asks NinjaTrader to flatten
NinjaTrader's Flatten works in two steps. It first cancels the orders still working on the account, including a market order that is still in flight (sent but not yet confirmed by the broker), and it sends the closing order only after the broker confirms the cancel. If the connection does not confirm the cancel within about 5 seconds, NinjaTrader gives up without closing the position and writes Close operation failed. Operation timed out. Replikanto asks NinjaTrader to flatten when it copies a Close from the leader, when you click Flatten All or the X button of a follower, and when Market Only or Follower Guard flatten a follower, so the same thing can happen there.
Starting with Replikanto 1.7.1.0, the Log tab (Control Center > Log, filtered by Replikanto:) shows what happened:
-
Flatten found <n> market order(s) still in flight on this account and instrument.(Information) is written just before Replikanto calls the Flatten, when a market order of that account has not been confirmed yet. On its own it only tells you that the Flatten may have to wait for that order. -
Warning [1121] NinjaTrader's Flatten was called for this account, but no close order appeared within 8 s and the position is still open. NinjaTrader may have given up on it...is written 8 seconds after the Flatten if the position is still open on the same side and no close order appeared. It can also be a false alarm on a connection that delivers order events late: the close may still be on its way.
When you see Warning [1121], check the position at the broker first (for example in RTrader Pro on Rithmic, or in your broker's own platform), before closing anything by hand, because the close may still arrive. If the position is still open, follow the steps in this article: contact your account provider's trade desk, or close it by hand in the broker's platform. Replikanto does not repeat the Flatten on its own.
Important Considerations for Replikanto Users
- Order Management: Replikanto does not control the connection between NinjaTrader and the broker. It uses the NinjaTrader flattening method to close positions. If closing does not work in NinjaTrader, it will not work in Replikanto when using the Flatten All method, as it relies on NinjaTrader to flatten the account.
- NinjaTrader Performance: NinjaTrader's performance is not affected by internet download speed, but connection losses may be more noticeable with slower connections.
By following these steps, you can address the "Close operation failed" error and minimize the risk of it occurring again.
